Free, independent tools that help freelancers and small businesses make sense of VAT and GST — without the jargon.
Figuring out whether you need to register for VAT or GST shouldn't require an accountant and an afternoon. Registration thresholds, rates, and filing rules vary wildly between countries and change every year — so we built a set of free tools that give small business owners and freelancers a quick, plain-English answer, backed by official government sources.
Every rate, threshold, and filing rule on this site is sourced directly from the relevant government tax authority — HMRC (UK), ATO (Australia), CRA (Canada), BZSt (Germany), Revenue (Ireland), the GST portal and CBIC (India), Agenzia delle Entrate (Italy), Belastingdienst (Netherlands), Inland Revenue (New Zealand), and SARS (South Africa). Each guide links directly to the specific official page it's based on, so you can check the primary source yourself rather than take our word for it. EU VAT number validation is not sourced from us at all — it queries the European Commission's live VIES API directly, in your browser.
Figures are checked against the official source when a guide is written or substantially revised, and each page shows the month that happened. Tax rules do change, sometimes with little notice, so treat this site as a fast orientation — not a final answer. Always confirm anything that affects a real filing or registration decision with the official source (linked on every guide) or a qualified accountant. See our disclaimer for the full terms.
Spotted a rate that's changed or a page that's out of date? Tell us — corrections get priority over everything else on our list.
VATchecker is an independent project, not affiliated with HMRC, the ATO, the CRA, or any other tax authority. It's maintained by a small team who builds and fact-checks each guide against primary government sources rather than secondhand summaries. We're not a firm of accountants and don't offer paid advice — the tools and guides are free, and the site is funded entirely by display advertising (see below).
VATchecker is free to use and supported by display advertising (Google AdSense). We don't charge for any tool on this site and never will. See our privacy policy for details on how advertising cookies are used.
